Magento Manufacturing Demo

We have made a headless Magento and Next.js demo for manufacturers. This headless system showcases the performance of Next.js and the customisation that Magento (Adobe Commerce) can bring to your ecommerce business.

A made-to-order bed brand running its online shop and its factory from one connected system. It's live, it's clickable, and you can try every part of it.

The shop and the factory don't talk to each other

Most businesses that manufacture, embroider or have some value element behind the scenes often need expensive middleware to run production schedules. The website will sit alone and sales will need to be imported into these production systems. Some systems can talk to each other via API connections, or by manually importing or typing jobs into the system.

But when we use a platform such as Magento, there is no need for this. As Magento is open source, we can develop our own manufacturing modules straight into the system and shape business processes here in the CMS, removing the need for third-party software.

Orders from your retail store and website can drop straight onto your factory floor, totally removing the need for people to print paper or move information from one system to another.

Things to try in the demo

The demo resets every night at 3am with around 90 orders mid-production, so don’t worry about breaking anything. Have a play around. The front end is fast and the products change colour, which is great for user experience and SEO.

You can add items to your cart and check out. As this is a demo, the payment gateway is turned off for test orders.

In the back end, the custom manufacturing and shipping modules are active. Your business may not sell beds, but another type of made-to-order product, our headless development services can tailor Magento to fit your exact product and internal process. It could range from bespoke furniture to embroidery, or any product where you add additional value in-house.

Things to try include:

  1. Build a divan in the storefront and put it through the demo checkout.
  2. Log in and find your order on the production dashboard.
  3. Open the base workshop board, assign someone and tick off the stages.
  4. Fail one at QC and watch it land on the remake board.
  5. Check the shipping hub to see what’s waiting on which part.
  6. Ship orders to complete the process.

Next.js storefront

The frontend

Northfold Beds is a demo brand we built to show what happens when we combine Magento 2 and React. The order is placed online or in-store and the guys on the factory floor pick it up straight away.

Fast and search friendly

Pages are rendered on the server, so Google sees the full content of the website for SEO and AI purposes.

A proper bed builder

Customers choose size, fabric, storage and headboard, and the price updates as they go.

Made-to-order and supplier products together

Divan beds and mattresses are made in the factory. Bed frames come direct from the supplier and are dropshipped to customers.

Tighter security

Because the frontend is decoupled, Magento never faces the public. Visitors only reach the storefront, while your admin and data sit behind it on their own subdomain.

Magento 2 admin

The factory back end

Built into Magento 2, this is the backend CMS where you add products, manage customers and run the factory system.

Production dashboard

Today's figures, what each workshop is working on, upcoming deliveries and anything that needs attention, all on one screen.

Automatic order splitting

Every order is split into base, mattress and headboard jobs and sent to the right workshop. No manual entry required for complex products.

Workshop boards

Assign jobs to staff members, start the job and tick off each stage. When it's made, the label prints. If it fails QC, it goes to a remake board, not out the door.

Shipping hub

See what's ready to go, with a tick for each finished part. "Ship now" only appears when every part of the order is done, so half an order never leaves the building.

Direct deliveries

Supplier items are sent to the supplier automatically, then tracked from requested to date confirmed, out for delivery and delivered. Late or slow-moving orders are flagged for chasing.

Productivity and traceability

Every job is logged with who did it and when. You get build times per person, QC fail rates, and a full "who made what" for any order.

Is this for you?

It’s a good fit if:

  • You make products to order, or sell a mix of made and supplied products
  • You’re on Magento, or thinking of moving to it
  • You dropship in addition to manufacturing
  • You’re factory runs on paper, spreadsheets or a system that doesn’t talk to your website
  • You’re paying for expensive middleware
  • Your business can’t scale without employing more staff

If you’re a smaller store happy on Shopify with no production side, this is probably more than you need, this is for manufacturers with complex products who need a bespoke system.

Tech we know

Platforms and frameworks we build with

NXFramework

Next.js

The framework behind this demo. Server rendering, fast page loads and routing that holds up as your catalogue grows.

M2Back end

Magento 2 / Adobe Commerce

Working with Magento since 2013. As a headless back end it runs your products, orders and customers, plus custom modules like the factory system in this demo.

REFront end

React

Interactive front ends like product builders, configurators and instant filtering. The kind of thing a standard theme struggles with.

VUEFront end

Vue Storefront

Our first headless build in 2019 used a Vue front end on Magento 2. We know how these storefronts fit together and where they get complicated.

HYFramework

Shopify Hydrogen

Shopify's own headless framework. A good fit if you want a custom front end but want to keep Shopify for products, checkout and payments.

CFCMS

Contentful

A headless CMS for content-heavy pages like guides, lookbooks and landing pages, so your team can publish without a developer.

WPCMS

Headless WordPress

WordPress as a CMS or blog behind your storefront, so your team keeps an editor they already know.
